CHRISTINE ELLINGHAUSEN

B.1952

CESTUDIO,1983-present,my studio life spans over 40 years.

Moving to South Florida in 1980 from New York City, I returned to making art full time.

First making contemporary ceramics, I then made oil monotypes and now mixed media photo collage on aluminum panel.

My early interest in ceramics was sparked by taking classes from Cleota Gabriel, who studied with great California abstract art potters of the 60s. Later I met Don Reitz, renown modernist ceramic artist, who combined wheel thrown and slab built clay into sculptures.

That combination of the practical “vessel” and the abstracted “form” was the theme of my art ceramics for the next 17 years

In 2015, I redesigned my studio to include large format digital printers to produce my original images allowing me to invent complex photo collage /mixed media works on aluminum panel and other creative substrates.

This process has liberated me to be able to collage images as a rebus of people, places and ephemera. My art work is to be read as visual poems, like puzzles of memories and associations…Each item conversing with the others, all working as one statement.

I love retro objects , left overs of our western world , as well as the prototypes and designs for our future possibilities.

Dreams of artists, writers and engineers, becoming reality while we watch…

Where will we go? What will we remember of who we were? How are we to construct the future?

Nostalgia soothes as we work on spaceship plans.Nothing to keep in your flight suit pockets… No objects… No marbles or earrings or ball point pens…toys or pictures of grandma…

Some things will be lost to history. Like a New York minuet in the library of time.

My studio is in lovely Lake Worth Beach, Florida, an old beach town on the Atlantic coast, where I continue to have creative fun ,no matter the weather.
